Stress and burnout

When pushing through stops working.

Work, caregiving, and the pressure to keep performing can leave you depleted or disconnected. Individual therapy can help you look at the demands you are carrying, notice patterns around overwork or perfectionism, and decide what needs to change.

The work can include practicing boundaries, asking for support, and making room for recovery. If exhaustion overlaps with anxiety, low mood, or relationship concerns, you can explore those together without choosing a label first.

What sessions can involve

Make room for understanding and action.

You might arrive with a specific situation, a recurring feeling, or a sense that something needs to change. Your therapist can help you connect what is happening now with the thoughts, relationships, and experiences that shape your responses.

Depending on your goals and your clinician’s approach, sessions may combine reflection with practical work: examining a harsh assumption, preparing for a difficult conversation, practicing a boundary, or exploring ways to respond when emotions feel intense.

Your goals can be specific to daily life: responding differently to worry, making a decision with more confidence, asking for what you need, or feeling less driven by an old pattern. You and your therapist can revisit those goals as your understanding develops.

From first contact to your first session

Know what comes next.

Every new client begins with a free consultation with Natasha Watkins, our Clinical Director, before meeting with their therapist. You can share a brief outline of what brings you in and discuss clinician fit, availability, where you will attend online sessions, and billing questions.

Your first therapy session gives you and your therapist time to get to know one another, discuss what you hope to work on, and begin identifying a direction. You do not need to have everything figured out or tell your whole history at once.

Ask questions about your therapist’s style and how you will work together. Your preferences and feedback are part of the conversation.

How do I choose a therapist?+

Read the clinician profiles for their focus, approach, and locations served. You can discuss your preferences with Natasha during your free consultation before meeting with a therapist. Beth works with Virginia clients only.

You can raise questions about your comfort, goals, or the way sessions are going. Tell your therapist or contact the practice so you can discuss the concerns and possible next steps.
